My role is mainly in the financial crime team within the compliance team, so we work with police forces and look at any vehicles that have been stolen and try to protect the organisation and customers from fraudsters. We work closely with the police to track down missing/stolen vehicles and monitor new applications to mitigate the risk of fraud and money laundering occurring.
I came straight out of college after doing business, maths and economics at A-level. I was always interested in mathematical data and how different organisations work and I wasn't really sure if university was the right option for me, so I started looking on the gov.uk website and found BMW Group.
It’s very exciting working at BMW Group in terms of the new products that we’re bringing out as well as the organisation itself being very forward thinking and innovative. There’s a great culture promoting diversity and collaboration and it’s very important to make sure that we’re aware of other areas of the business and how we can work together to put the customer first in all of the decisions that we make, whilst making sure the decisions are adhering to the rules and guidance set out by the regulator.
My apprenticeship has been brilliant because I was quite shy to start with and it’s been really good to be able to gain all of the skills that that came along with working with so many different parts of the business. The brilliant mentors and managers have helped bring me out of my shell, expose me to different parts of the business and pushed me out of my comfort zone to make me more comfortable taking on tasks and challenges that I previously wouldn’t have.
I had a mentor within my team, so I always had a touch point to meet with weekly or more frequently if I wanted to run through anything that I had concerns about. They helped to set up a plan for me so that I could make sure that I was hitting the targets that I had from a work perspective as well as all the development areas that come with the apprenticeship – making sure I was getting all the knowledge, skills and behaviour that I needed and then having examples to be able to demonstrate my competency in each discipline.
My role has developed quite a lot over the four years that I’ve been here, and I was also given the opportunity to do a short-term secondment into the quality assurance team. It was great to do something completely different and it gave me great exposure too, allowing me to gain a greater understanding of the teams that I work with on a day-to-day basis.
If you're willing to learn, want to be able to make a difference and have a career that brings you those opportunities then BMW Group will develop you and get you to where you want to be.
