Working student Alvin in a BMW office
Working student Alvin on networking opportunities, personal growth and unforgettable moments at BMW

Alvin is a working student at the BMW Group. He is studying Physical Engineering at Munich University of Applied Sciences and discovered his passion for the automotive industry during his mandatory internship at the BMW Group. In this interview, he provides insights into his experiences – as a former intern and currently, as a working student.

I already felt totally at home during my internship and really wanted to stay with the company, but at the same time also continue my studies. So, I simply asked colleagues whether they might need support from a working student. I was recommended to a colleague from a neighbouring department, with whom I met for a coffee – and that's how I found my working student job.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO DO AN INTERNSHIP AT THE BMW GROUP IN THE FIRST PLACE?

"BMW is simply a great company with countless opportunities. I was always convinced that I could grow a lot here and develop my skills. It's great to build up such a large network as a student that you can fall back on even after graduation. And quite honestly, if you're interested in the automotive industry, you simply have to join BMW."

WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS MET?

"Yes, absolutely! I had imagined that the people at BMW would be super hard-working and committed – and they are. I have huge respect for the work that everyone does here. And of course, I had hoped that the size of the company would offer me lots of opportunities. That has also proved to be the case. The ‘application process’ for my working student job showed me that networking is important in a large company. But the fact that you can network with so many other students is also a great experience."

The NAWI (abbreviation for Nachwuchsinitiative) offers great opportunities for exchange. Students organise events, talks, city tours and leisure activities for other students. You not only get to know colleagues but also make friends and quickly get a good overview of the company.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE CORPORATE CULTURE AND COLLABORATION AT BMW?

"I just feel completely at ease here. Both the team spirit among colleagues and the interaction with managers is unique for me. Of course, you also have to perform – but you're happy to do that if you're offered a good environment. BMW may be a huge company, but the atmosphere is still very informal and warm."

I really appreciate the open manner of my colleagues. My German is not perfect, as I only came to Germany from Cameroon 3 years ago, but that was never an issue. I also feel like a fully-fledged member of the team and not ‘just’ an intern or working student. I'm pleased that I can not only support the team through my work, but that I'm also an important part of the group.

WAS THERE A PARTICULAR HIGHLIGHT DURING YOUR TIME AT BMW?

"Oh yes, a very special highlight was the works meeting last year. Everyone is given the opportunity to have their say – whether they are an apprentice, intern or working student. On that day, I dared to make a statement and speak in front of the entire workforce. I emphasised how happy I am at BMW and that it would be great if there were more BMW locations in Africa. Even the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and our CEO Oliver Zipse took part in this works meeting! It was a highlight for me to be able to share my thoughts in front of so many people and such inspiring personalities."

THAT SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT EXPERIENCE. WOULD YOU SAY YOU HAVE ALSO DEVELOPED PERSONALLY OR PROFESSIONALLY?

"I have for sure grown enormously professionally. I have learnt so many new skills, gained a lot of experience and learned an incredible amount from my colleagues. On the one hand, I work independently on my own projects, but on the other, I also support my colleagues with their tasks. Everyone in my department is a true professional and I can learn a lot from them. And it's also exciting for me to gain insights into working life in a large company – it helps me to better visualise my future after graduation."

My tip for applicants? Just have the courage! It didn't work out for me on my first attempt, but even in the first application process I learnt so much that I was able to put to good use on my second and third attempts. And in the end, I did reach my goal – and I've been happy at BMW for over a year now.
