Sustainability as a personal and professional driving force: Video insights and interview with Anna.

Anna works as a Sustainability Specialist in the Supply Chain at the BMW Group. But sustainability also plays a big role in her private life. In our interview and in the video, she talks about her work and what motivates her professionally and personally to be so committed to the topic of sustainability.

ANNA, WHAT TOPICS DO YOU DEAL WITH IN YOUR JOB AT THE BMW GROUP?

"My work is about the materials used in the interior of a vehicle. Essentially, it's about all the materials you can see and feel – the textiles, the carpet material, the boot. I focus on sustainability, on recycled materials and on improving the parts/materials to act in the spirit of a circular economy. Whenever we develop a new material, we have to think about whether it is sustainable. What is the carbon footprint? Is it recyclable at the end of its life?"

I'm glad this transformation is taking place and that I can be a part of it. It gives my work and my daily life a sense of purpose.

HOW DOES YOUR WORK SPECIFICALLY CONTRIBUTE TO THE SUSTAINABILITY GOALS OF THE BMW GROUP?

"My work contributes to the sustainability goals of the BMW Group as we analyse all parts. In terms of the interior, we calculate the carbon footprint and see which materials can reduce it and to what extent. What material mixes can be used to ensure the circular economy approach. I'm glad this transformation is taking place and that I can be a part of it. It really gives my work and my daily life a sense of purpose and I think that this purpose is what the younger generations are looking for in their work. I think it's quite normal to question whether what we do in our daily lives has a positive impact on the world. I have found that even if I change something very small at BMW, the impact is quite large because you can multiply it by two million cars. And when you add it all up, it's impressive. It's also very motivating to calculate the carbon dioxide and energy figures, because then I can see whether I'm really succeeding in making a change."

WHAT DOES SUSTAINABILITY MEAN TO YOU PERSONALLY?

"Sustainability is very important to me personally. The issue of climate change drives me, and I try to continuously reduce my footprint in my daily life. I eat vegan, I travel less, I cycle everywhere in the city, I use public transport, I try not to waste food and I talk about it. I think I've already been able to influence some people with information and facts about climate change."

Sustainability is an extremely broad area, and everyone can tackle the things they think have the biggest impact, and that's what I try to do. I'm glad the world is changing – at least the bubble I'm in.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION OF A SUSTAINABLE WORLD?

"For me, a sustainable world is one where we don't waste resources, where we can say we have enough left for future generations to live on, and where we've done everything we can to keep emissions within a corridor where the world doesn't perish."

I grew up in a family where sustainability was always an issue, for example when it came to shopping locally and buying fresh produce and lots of vegetables. But in general, I think I really got into this topic during my studies, when I learned more about climate change.
