Sophie is an intern in the field of HR Analytics & Marketing, studying Business Administration at the Konstanz University of Technology, Economics and Design, and has moved to Munich for her internship. In the interview, she provides an insight into some of her highlights and experiences as part of her assignment at the BMW Group.
SOPHIE, IS THERE ANYTHING IN YOUR INTERNSHIP THAT SURPRISED YOU?
"Yes, there were a few surprises for me – especially how laid-back and easy-going everyone is here. I had expected a more conservative environment. The friendly atmosphere is particularly remarkable. In my environment, I notice strong teams with a very strong community, but without competition between colleagues or departments. There are also hardly any noticeable hierarchies – as an intern, I am seen as a fully-fledged colleague."
HOW DID YOU EXPERIENCE YOUR MANAGERS?
"The managers – even at higher levels – all know me by my first name and are very open and uncomplicated with me. They’re not arrogant, but down-to-earth and just like ‘normal’ colleagues. I was particularly impressed by the fact that I got to know many female role models – for example our Head of Department, but also a female colleague who has just moved from our department to a management position. The career paths of these women are very inspiring and motivating for me."
... AND WHAT ABOUT YOUR MENTORS?
"I have two mentors. Both of them take the time to explain everything to me in detail. They show great understanding if I don't understand something right away or make a mistake. What I particularly like is that they regularly and sincerely thank me for my work, and I feel like I'm making an important contribution. This is very motivating for me."
DID YOU HAVE CERTAIN EXPECTATIONS ABOUT YOUR TASKS? WERE THESE EXPECTATIONS MET?
"My expectations were even exceeded. I had expected that as an intern I would mainly be given simpler and supporting tasks, but I am allowed to take on a lot of responsibility and have a lot of freedom to carry out independent tasks and projects. Ultimately, how much you work independently is also up to you. The most important thing for me is: I'm never bored and I always have something to do, and I can also learn in the process."
